Rheology and Morphology Development in Immiscible Polymer Blends

چکیده
In this review, progress towards a fundamental understanding of the rheologymorphology relationship in immiscible polymer blends is discussed. The behaviour of biphasic polymer fluids, containing Newtonian components and subjected to simple shear flows is relatively well understood at present. The behaviour of these “simple” blends will be discussed first, as it serves as a reference for the other sections. In this overview, we will focus on studies that try to incorporate more complex but also more realistic aspects of blend behaviour. Firstly, structure development in compatibilized blends will be reviewed. Secondly, morphology generation in blends with viscoelastic components will be discussed. Thirdly, since blends are typically processed in mixing equipment in which the flow field is a complex combination of shear and elongation, the microstructural evolution in complex flow fields certainly deserves some attention. This includes the behaviour of polymer blends during special diagnostic flow conditions i.e. upon flow reversal and during LAOS. The overview closes with a discussion of blend morphology development in confined geometries.

Velankar Strain recovery of model immiscible blends : effects of added compatibilizer
Immiscible homopolymers are often blended mechanically to obtain blends with properties significantly superior to those of the component polymers. The creep recovery of such blends was studied in the previous paper, henceforth referred to as I. Surface-active compatibilizers are commonly added to such blends to improve blending of the immiscible phases and to improve the mechanical properties o...

The rheological properties of blends of immiscible homopolymers have received much attention in recent years (Tucker and Moldenaers 2002). Several publications have been devoted to examining the relationship between the rheology and morphology of two-phase blends. A key strategy employed by many researchers was to conduct experiments on ‘‘model’’ blends that were comprised of rheologically-simp...
متن کاملRheology and morphology of model immiscible polymer blends with monodisperse spherical particles at the interface
We show that the addition of solid particles to droplet–matrix blends of immiscible polymers induces massive changes in the rheology and the flow-induced structure even at loadings as low as 0.1 vol. %. Experiments were conducted using blends of polyethylene oxide (PEO, dispersed phase), polyisobutylene (PIB, continuous phase), and 470 nm monodisperse silica particles with two different surface...
متن کاملThe influence of branching efficiency on the rheology and morphology of melt state long chain branched polypropylene/polybutene-1 blends
In this study, the compatibility of the blends of polypropylene (PP) and polybutene-1(PB-1) homopolymer before and after long chain branching process were studied. The blends were prepared and long-chain branched directly via reactive extrusion process in presence of free radical initiator and trimethylolpropane tri methacrylate (TMPTMA) poly functional monomer. The optimum percentage of TMPTMA...
